What is the safest and most efficient
way to drop off and pick up our child?
**Unfortunately, there is NO DROP OFF PARKING
at or behind the Playhouse.**
Vehicles are also not allowed to park or wait in the driveway
next door. Please DO NOT stop on Route 66 to drop of children. There
is too much traffic to stop by the curb. (Also, OP driveway
must stay clear at all times for our buses.) There are three safe
options to choose from (Municipal lot across the street, Pearl St,
or Wetmore place).
How often and for how long do classes meet?
Classes meet once per week for eight consecutive weeks, with an additional open class/share day for parents and friends. Mainstage shows and mini-productions meet twice per week for the duration of the rehearsal period and we often try to schedule extra rehearsals the week before performances.
Why can’t we sit in on the classes with our kids?
While in class over the eight weeks, the kids will be working in relatively small groups (classes are limited to 15 participants) to build trust, a sense of safety and learn to work together as an ensemble. Experience has taught us that having observers in the class immediately changes the group dynamic. Consequently, while we applaud your interest in what is happening with your child here at Oddfellows, we request that you do not ask to sit in on a regular class. If you have concerns about anything going on in class, let me (the Program Manager) know. Please keep in mind that the last class of the session will be an open class, and we hope you will come for a glimpse of what the kids have been doing.
Should we call Oddfellows if we’ll be late or absent from a class?
Yes! This information helps the teacher adjust class plans. Students often work in pairs or small groups and knowing about absences ahead of time helps the teacher cover for the missing partner.
When is a good time to talk with my child’s teacher?
In general, after class is a better time to check in with the teacher since they are setting up for the day’s activities before class. You can also let me know if you would like to talk to the teacher by phone. I’d be happy to help you get in touch. If you have a concern about the class, let me know right away so we can help in whatever way is appropriate.
What do we do about holidays?
Because different school systems schedule different vacation days, Oddfellows classes take place as scheduled regardless of holidays or school vacations.
What about bad weather?
Our snow cancellation policy is included in this packet, but the finer points of it are that a call on class cancellation is made by noon on the day in question. You can find the cancellation listed on News Channel 8 WTNH, www.wtnh.com, www.965tic.com, www.wrch.com, www.wtic.com.
You may call us with any questions, but if you are able to look it up in one of these ways – it would be greatly appreciated.
Do you need to know about my child’s special needs?
Yes. This knowledge helps the teacher to better serve your child. Please list on your registration form any special medical, behavioral, or social issues that we should be aware of, or give me a call to share that information. This information is kept confidential.
Will there be a chance for me to see my child in action?
Yes. The last class of the session will be an open class/share day event. This event is a great chance to see what your child has been working on so hard all semester, and also gives parents a chance to meet each other. More information will be sent as the date approaches.
What are the expectations of my child and me as a parent?
First and foremost, to have fun! Oddfellows is a place where children learn and grow. A big part of acting is teamwork, which means working together and showing respect for other students, teachers, teaching assistants and Playhouse staff. We welcome parent involvement in helping to foster this positive learning environment. If you are interested in serving as a teaching assistant for one of our classes (sorry, we can’t put you in your child’s class, see above) please contact me.
